Fun with Letters |

Keep your child spellbound with these simple activities |
Alphabet Scramble |
 |
Letter Portraits |
 |
Write each of the 26 letters of the alphabet on separate sticky notes and help your child stick the notes on the wall in order. Have them close their eyes, then switch the letters around. When they open their eyes again, see if they can put the letters back in the right order. (If they need a hint try singing the ABC song.) |
Draw a large letter on a piece of paper, then give your child coloured pencils or crayons and have them turn the letter into a portrait of something else. A lower-case "m" might become a camel, for example, or an upper-case "B" could change into a butterfly. For extra credit, tell older children that they can draw only objects that start with the letter on the page. |
When they are ready for another challenge, encourage them to place each sticky note on an object whose name starts with the letter, such as "c" on a cabinet or "d" on a door. |

Using just a pair of scissors, a pen and different coloured pieces of felt you and your child can create great labels for their wardrobe.
Step 1. Decide on a different coloured piece of felt for each day of the week (using pieces about the size of A4 works best but you can do them any size). Cut off the top corners, and label the day with cut out felt letters. (You could also

use fabric paint for the lettering, these are available from most craft or haberdashery shops)
Step 2. Cut a 1 inch diameter hole in the top centre of the felt and a 2 x 2 inch X on each side of the felt near the bottom. Step 3. With your child, select the week's clothes and dress a hanger with shirt, trousers, or skirt for each day. Poke a pair of socks and underwear through the sign's two X's, then hang the sign over the clothes by hooking the hanger neck through the top hole. |
Help your child get a feel for writing - no paper or pencils required!
First, sprinkle a layer of flour over the bottom of a rimmed baking sheet, then slowly show them how to write letters with one or two fingers. When they are ready to start over, gently shake the sheet to erase the letters. Store the flour in a bag when not in use. |
